Marques Haynes, born March 10, 1926, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, was the Harlem Globetrotters' dribbling virtuoso, widely regarded as one of the greatest ball handlers in basketball history. At Langston University he led an upset of the Globetrotters in 1946 that caught owner Abe Saperstein's eye; he joined the team in 1947 and starred until 1953, including the celebrated victories over the champion Minneapolis Lakers in 1948 and 1949 — in the 1948 game his dribbling protected the lead through the final minutes. After leaving to help found the rival Harlem Magicians in 1953, he returned for a second Globetrotters stint from 1972 to 1979, serving as player-coach in 1974–75. Across a 46-year professional career he is credited with playing in more than 12,000 games in 97 countries. The Globetrotters retired his number 20, and in 1998 he became the first Globetrotter player inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame — a distinction stated precisely, because earlier inductees with Globetrotter ties (owner Abe Saperstein, Wilt Chamberlain, Connie Hawkins, Pop Gates) were not enshrined as Globetrotter players. He died on May 22, 2015, in Plano, Texas, at age 89.

Notes

Founder-directed addition, 2026-11-03 (Globetrotters packet; not drawn from the roster pool). FIRSTS DISPOSITION: 'first Globetrotter inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (1998)' is ASSERTED in its precise form — 'first Globetrotter player inducted' — because the African American Registry documents that affiliated figures (Saperstein, Chamberlain, Hawkins, Gates) were elected earlier on other bases. The countries figure is carried as 97 (University of North Texas Athletics); his Associated Press obituary's 'more than 100 countries' variant is noted here, not blended. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Haynes is the technician of the Globetrotter tradition — the dribbling that protected the 1948 Lakers win was competitive craft before it was showmanship, and his record is the place to make that point against the 'mere entertainment' reading of the team's early decades.
