Cornelius 'Connie' Hawkins, born July 17, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, was a playground legend whose career became a landmark case in American sports law. A Parade High School All-American at Brooklyn's Boys' High, he entered the University of Iowa in 1960 but never played a varsity game: caught up in the 1961 point-shaving investigation, he was held and questioned without counsel and expelled — although, as the standard biographical record stresses, he was never charged with any crime, and his only documented tie to fixer Jack Molinas was a $200 gift for airfare that Molinas later swore he never used to involve Hawkins in fixing. Barred from college basketball and blacklisted by the NBA, Hawkins played for the Pittsburgh Rens of the American Basketball League (1962–1963) and then joined the Harlem Globetrotters; in 1967–68 he won the American Basketball Association championship and Most Valuable Player award with the Pittsburgh Pipers. His $6 million antitrust suit against the NBA ended in June 1969 with a reported $1.3 million settlement and the lifting of the ban; at 27 he finally entered the NBA with the Phoenix Suns and became a four-time All-Star. The Suns retired his number 42, and in 1992 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He died on October 6, 2017, in Phoenix, Arizona, at age 75.

Notes
Founder-directed addition, 2026-11-03 (Globetrotters packet; not drawn from the roster pool). CONTESTED-HISTORY DISPOSITION (GOV-004): the point-shaving matter is carried entirely in attributed form — the accusation (gamblers naming him under prosecutorial pressure; expulsion by Iowa), the exculpatory record (never charged; the $200 airfare gift; Molinas's own affidavit that Hawkins was never used and was unaware), and the institutional outcome (NBA ban, 1966 formal bar, $6M antitrust suit, June 1969 settlement of $1.3M, ban lifted by Commissioner Kennedy) are each stated as their sources give them; no version is blended into a verdict. BRIEF CORRECTION, flagged per GOV-004: the packet brief dated Hawkins's Globetrotters move to 1961; the sourced sequence (Scribner) puts the Pittsburgh Rens (ABL) in 1962–1963 and the Globetrotters after, in the mid-1960s and before the 1967 Pipers — the record follows the sources, and his played_for edge is deliberately left without start/end dates. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Hawkins is the Globetrotters' most legally consequential alumnus — the exile years show what the team meant as a refuge for Black talent the league would not touch, and his settlement is a hinge between the barnstorming era and the modern players'-rights era. GATE A DISCOVERY: the bare alias 'The Hawk' was removed — it already belongs to Andre Dawson (CTL-E-6818, S1) in the live graph; Hawkins is carried under his full names.
Relationships
- Harlem Globetrotters — played for
Connie Hawkins joined the Harlem Globetrotters after two seasons with the Pittsburgh Rens of the American Basketball League (1962–1963), during his NBA blacklist years, and before joining the Pittsburgh Pipers of the ABA in 1967. Dates are deliberately not set on this edge: the sourced sequence (Dictionary of American Biography) fixes the order but not exact Globetrotters season boundaries.
