Rocky Johnson (born Wayde Douglas Bowles, August 24, 1944, in Amherst, Nova Scotia – January 15, 2020) was a Canadian star of the National Wrestling Alliance territories before his World Wrestling Federation run. Mentored early in his career by Bobo Brazil, he became one of the era's most traveled Black headliners. WWE's tag team title history records the landmark entry of November 15, 1983 (aired December 10, 1983), in which Johnson and Tony Atlas, as The Soul Patrol, took the WWF Tag Team Championship in the title match against the Wild Samoans — making them the first African American and Black world tag team champions in WWE history. Johnson is the father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who inducted him into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.

Notes

Firsts disposition: ASSERTED: with Tony Atlas, first African American / Black world tag team champions in WWE history (title-history entry of November 15, 1983) — WWE, Sportsnet, and Wikipedia concur. Photo: CLEARED — 'Rocky Johnson, circa 1983.jpg' (unknown author), Public domain per Commons API extmetadata. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Half of the Soul Patrol breakthrough and the patriarch of a three-generation wrestling family; his mentorship link to Bobo Brazil ties this packet to the graph's existing record CTL-E-6902. Staged 2026-11-03 in packet W (professional wrestling), temp id — merge assigns the next sequential CTL-E id. No CTL-SPE roster id exists for professional wrestling — the AAES roster's wrestling shelf holds only Olympic wrestling and Bobo Brazil (CTL-E-6902). See the packet memo's roster-addition proposal.
