Dave Winfield (born October 3, 1951, in St. Paul, Minnesota) was one of the most gifted all-around athletes ever to choose baseball. Drafted out of the University of Minnesota by four leagues — the San Diego Padres in baseball, the Minnesota Vikings in football, and both the Atlanta Hawks (NBA) and Utah Stars (ABA) in basketball — he is the only athlete drafted in three professional sports' drafts and never played a day in the minors, going straight to San Diego's outfield in 1973. A twelve-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner, Winfield collected 3,110 hits and 465 home runs across twenty-two seasons with the Padres, Yankees, Angels, Blue Jays, Twins, and Cleveland. In 1992, at forty, he drove in the World Series-winning run in extra innings of Game 6 for Toronto — the franchise's first championship — becoming the oldest player to deliver a Series-deciding hit of that kind. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, his first year of eligibility.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0291. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in sourced form — the only athlete drafted by teams in three professional sports (Hall of Fame and Wikipedia); the 'oldest player' 1992 formulation is carried modestly ('of that kind') because the sources phrase it as an age record for a World Series-winning RBI. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Winfield's draft card is the exhibit — four leagues bid for him, and baseball got the whole career. Photo: CLEARED (1981 Yankees portrait, public domain).
