Dwight Gooden (born November 16, 1964, in Tampa, Florida), nicknamed "Doc" and "Dr. K," produced one of the most brilliant pitching peaks on record. Gooden was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1984 at nineteen, then in 1985, at twenty, won the pitching Triple Crown — 24 wins, a 1.53 ERA, and 268 strikeouts — and the Cy Young Award unanimously. In 1986 he helped the New York Mets to the World Series championship. Over his first eight seasons he won 132 games; thereafter, substance-abuse suspensions and injuries cut repeatedly into his prime, a loss his records state plainly and that he has discussed publicly for decades as part of his recovery advocacy. He authored a second act with the Yankees, pitching a no-hitter on May 14, 1996, and winning two more World Series rings (1996, 2000) before retiring in 2001 with 194 wins and 2,293 strikeouts. The Mets retired his number 16 in 2024. His nephew is outfielder Gary Sheffield.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0309. Firsts disposition: no 'first' asserted; the 1985 Triple Crown and unanimous Cy Young are carried as Britannica and Wikipedia state them. The addiction history is carried factually and briefly, per GOV-004 — it is part of the documented career and of his own public account. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Gooden's 1985 remains the best season a twenty-year-old pitcher has ever had; the graph keeps the brilliance and the cost in the same frame.
