Dominique Wilkins (born January 12, 1960, in Paris, France, where his father was stationed with the U.S. Air Force, and raised in North Carolina and Baltimore), known as "The Human Highlight Film," was the Atlanta Hawks' franchise scorer and the dunk contest's defining artist. The third pick of the 1982 draft out of Georgia, Wilkins averaged 24.8 points over fifteen NBA seasons, won the 1986 scoring title at 30.3 points per game, and won two Slam Dunk contests (1985, 1990); his 1990 duel-era battles with Michael Jordan fixed the event's mythology. A nine-time All-Star, he scored 26,668 NBA points — among the highest totals ever for a player who never won a championship — and carried his game to Europe, winning a EuroLeague championship with Panathinaikos in 1996 and an Italian Cup with Bologna, before a final NBA season in 1999. The Hawks retired his number 21 and raised his statue outside their arena. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
