PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Mamie Phipps Clark (1917–1983) was a psychologist whose 'doll studies,' conducted with her husband Kenneth Clark, showed that segregation damaged Black children's self-concept — research cited by the US Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education (1954). In 1946 the Clarks founded Harlem's Northside Center for Child Development, which she directed for decades, joining experimental psychology to direct service for children. Her master's research on the development of consciousness of self in Black preschool children began the line of work that changed American law.
