Willis Reed (June 25, 1942 – March 21, 2023), born in Hico, Louisiana, and a Grambling State star, was the captain and center of the New York Knicks' championship teams. Reed won the 1970 NBA Most Valuable Player Award and swept the season's MVP honors — regular season, All-Star Game, and Finals — the first player to take all three in one year. In Game 7 of the 1970 Finals, after missing Game 6 with a torn thigh muscle, Reed walked onto the Madison Square Garden floor, scored the Knicks' first two baskets, and supplied the era's defining image of competitive will; the Knicks won their first title, and another in 1973, when Reed was again Finals MVP. A seven-time All-Star, he retired in 1974 as the Knicks' foundational big man and later coached and managed in the league. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982; his was the first number (19) the Knicks retired.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0334. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in sourced form — first player to win the regular-season, All-Star, and Finals MVP awards in the same season (1970), per the Hall of Fame and Wikipedia; first retired Knicks number carried as sourced. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Two baskets in Game 7 outrank whole careers in the public memory; the record restores the decade around them. Photo: CLEARED (1969 portrait, public domain; actress Florence Reed and singer Reed Miller files in the search were refused as namesakes).
