Combined Graph record U-07906 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-7034.

Junious 'Buck' Buchanan (September 10, 1940 – July 16, 1992) was a 6-foot-7, 270-pound two-way tackle at Grambling State University under coach Eddie Robinson, named NAIA and Black College All-America in 1962, who became the first player selected in the 1963 American Football League draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. His selection was a landmark for Black college football: reference accounts describe him as the first African American taken with the first overall selection in an AFL or NFL draft, and the first player from an all-Black school chosen first overall. Buchanan played all 13 of his professional seasons for the Chiefs (1963–75), earned All-Pro honors six times, anchored the defense that won Super Bowl IV, and missed only one game in his career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990 — the first AFL defensive lineman selected, per his Hall accounts — and into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996; the FCS Buck Buchanan Award now honors the top defensive player at that level annually.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0388. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in sourced form — first overall selection of the 1963 AFL draft (College Football Hall of Fame and SWAC agree), described by reference accounts as the first African American taken with the first overall pick in an AFL/NFL draft and the first player from an all-Black school chosen first overall; the claim is attributed in the description rather than stated as an unexamined absolute. 'First AFL defensive lineman in the Pro Football Hall of Fame' is carried as his Hall accounts state it. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Buchanan's draft position is the document that proves the AFL built its credibility on Black college talent the NFL had undervalued — Grambling's giant went first overall, then spent 13 years showing why, and the award bearing his name keeps an HBCU name at the center of defensive football.
