Combined Graph record U-07909 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-7037.

John Mackey (September 24, 1941 – July 6, 2011) revolutionized the tight end position for the Baltimore Colts after being drafted out of Syracuse University in 1963, catching 331 passes for 5,236 yards and 38 touchdowns in ten seasons with Baltimore and San Diego and playing in five Pro Bowls. His second career was larger: elected a Colts player representative in 1969, Mackey became the first president of the combined National Football League Players Association after the AFL–NFL merger, moved its headquarters to Washington, and led the fight for improved pensions and free agency. He lent his name as lead plaintiff to the antitrust case Mackey v. NFL, in which the Rozelle Rule was ruled to violate antitrust law in 1976, a landmark on the road to free agency. Diagnosed with dementia in later life, Mackey became the namesake of the '88 Plan' — created in 2007 and named for his jersey number — which provides substantial financial assistance to former players with dementia. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992, only the second pure tight end elected, a delay many attributed to his union leadership.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0391. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED as sourced — first president of the combined/post-merger NFLPA (NFLPA and Hall of Fame agree on the fact; they differ on the year, the Hall dating his presidency from 1969 and the NFLPA from early 1970, so the description claims the office without pinning the election year). 'Mackey Plan' terminology: NO source supports a benefit called the 'Mackey Plan' — the sourced name is the '88 Plan' (2007), and the record uses that name only; 'Mackey Plan' should not be used. Mackey v. NFL is carried as sourced: lead plaintiff, Rozelle Rule ruled an antitrust violation in 1976. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Mackey is the rare athlete whose most important plays were made in a courtroom and a union hall — he spent his own Hall of Fame chances, on the widely held theory recorded by the Hall itself, to buy free agency and dementia care for players who came after him. Photo: CLEARED — 'John mackey press photo 1972.jpg,' Category:John Mackey, description ties it to his San Diego Chargers signing, Public domain. NAMESAKE GUARD: Commons also holds many photographs of John Mackey the Whole Foods co-founder; all were rejected, and only the football-category file was cleared.
