Michael Pettaway Tomlin, born March 15, 1972, in Hampton, Virginia, became the sixteenth head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers on January 22, 2007, hired at age thirty-four after one season as Minnesota's defensive coordinator and five as Tampa Bay's defensive backs coach. He was only the third Steelers head coach since 1969. In his second season Pittsburgh beat Arizona 27-23 in Super Bowl XLIII; the Steelers record that Tomlin, at 36 years and 323 days, became the youngest head coach in NFL history to coach in and win a Super Bowl at that time — a mark Sean McVay later surpassed. In the Steelers' June 2024 extension announcement, the club stated Tomlin had never had a losing record through seventeen seasons, the only head coach to begin a tenure with at least seventeen consecutive non-losing seasons, with a 173-100-2 regular-season record at that date.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0416. Firsts disposition: youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl — carried only in the Steelers' dated form ('at the time,' 36 years 323 days, Super Bowl XLIII), with Sean McVay's later surpassing noted; the never-a-losing-season streak is carried as of the Steelers' June 2024 announcement (17 consecutive non-losing seasons to begin his tenure), not projected beyond that source. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Tomlin's significance is sustained contention under one standard over a very long tenure, plus a title won younger than any head coach before him.
