Marjorie Stewart Joyner

Born October 24, 1896, in Monterey, Virginia; moved to Chicago in 1912. In 1916, at age 20, she became the first Black student to graduate from Chicago's A.B. Moler Beauty and Culture School. Inventor of the permanent wave machine (U.S. Patent No. 1,693,515, 1928); vice president of the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Co. and national supervisor of 200 Walker beauty schools; inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2023.
