Sam Langford of Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, was a Canadian boxer who fought from lightweight to heavyweight across a career the International Boxing Hall of Fame puts at twenty-four years, beginning in 1902. His birth year is split across sources: the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame notes conflicting records giving 1883, 1884, 1885 or 1886, while The Canadian Encyclopedia gives March 4, 1886, and many boxing references give March 4, 1883; this record carries both 1883 and 1886 with attribution and picks neither. The Hall records that he beat Joe Gans in 1903, faced future heavyweight champion Jack Johnson in 1906 despite being outweighed by at least twenty pounds, knocked out former light-heavyweight champion Philadelphia Jack O'Brien in 1911, and fought Harry Wills eighteen times. After almost three hundred recorded bouts, by the Hall's count, he retired troubled by eye problems that led to blindness. BlackPast and The Canadian Encyclopedia document that, despite his qualifications, he never received an opportunity to fight for a world championship in the United States. He died January 12, 1956, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0441. Firsts disposition: no championship 'first' is claimed; BlackPast's statement that he was the first boxer voted into the Boxing Hall of Fame (1955) without a world championship is carried attributed to BlackPast in the sources, not asserted in the description. BIRTH-YEAR SPLIT, carried openly: 1883 (many boxing references; the IBHOF narrative that he began in 1902 'at the age of nineteen' is consistent with 1883) versus 1886 (The Canadian Encyclopedia and BlackPast, both giving March 4, 1886); the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame expressly notes conflicting records spanning 1883-1886. Era field therefore reads '1883/1886–1956' and neither year is picked silently. Title-shot exclusion is documented with attribution (BlackPast: 'never received an opportunity to fight for a world championship' despite his qualifications; The Canadian Encyclopedia: among the best fighters never to win a U.S. title, with a racial-barriers account) — never stated as unattributed editorial assertion. Career totals: carried ONLY as the IBHOF states them — 'almost three hundred recorded bouts' over 24 years; published win-loss totals vary widely by source (e.g., The Canadian Encyclopedia's 'most comprehensive listing' of 214-46-44) and are NOT carried as this record's totals. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Langford may be the strongest case in the archive of greatness the title system refused to certify; the record documents the refusal rather than repairing it.
