Bob Foster, born December 15, 1938 — the International Boxing Hall of Fame gives that date; BoxRec notes his birth has also been listed as April 27, 1942, and his birthplace, which the Associated Press gives as Borger, Texas, has also been listed as Lubbock — turned professional in 1961 and won the world light heavyweight championship in May 1968, knocking out Dick Tiger in the fourth round at Madison Square Garden. The Hall records that he dominated the division until he retired as champion in 1974; the Associated Press counts fourteen successful title defenses. His challenges at heavyweight ended in knockout losses to champion Joe Frazier in two rounds in 1970 and to Muhammad Ali in eight rounds in 1972, the Hall records. He retired after a controversial 1974 draw with Jorge Ahumada, returned to win five straight, and retired for good after a 1978 knockout loss. Both the Hall and the Associated Press give his totals as 56 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw with 46 knockouts. Foster worked as a Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy and detective in Albuquerque, the Associated Press records, and died there on November 21, 2015, at age seventy-six. He was inducted into the Hall in its inaugural 1990 class.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0464. Birth disposition (variance carried, not blended): the Hall gives December 15, 1938; BoxRec notes the date has also been listed as April 27, 1942, and the birthplace (Borger, Texas, per BoxRec and the Associated Press) also as Lubbock, Texas — the era field follows the Hall. Totals disposition: no split — the Hall and the Associated Press agree at 56-8-1 (46 KOs), and the figures are carried in that agreed form. The 1968 Tiger (S8-05) title win and the Frazier and Ali heavyweight fights are bout results in the description, not relationship edges. Title-defense count (14) is carried attributed to the Associated Press. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Foster's is the dominant-champion record of the post-Moore light heavyweight era — long reign at 175, ambition punished at heavyweight, and a second career in law enforcement, all on the Hall and wire-service record.
