Eddie Futch, born August 9, 1911, was an American boxing trainer whose own amateur career in Detroit — he won the Detroit Golden Gloves as a lightweight in 1933 — ended when a heart murmur was detected, turning him to training. His first world champion was Don Jordan, who won the world welterweight championship in 1958, and the International Boxing Hall of Fame's biographical record credits him with 21 world champions before his retirement in 1998. He began working with Joe Frazier in 1966 as an assistant to manager-trainer Yancey Durham and took over as Frazier's manager and trainer when Durham died in 1973; Futch's strategy underpinned Frazier's 1971 'Fight of the Century' win over Muhammad Ali, and it was Futch who stopped Frazier from coming out for the 15th round of the 1975 'Thrilla in Manila.' In the exact form the standard accounts give it, Futch trained four of the five men who defeated Muhammad Ali — Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick. His champions also included Bob Foster and Riddick Bowe, who handed Evander Holyfield his first professional defeat under Futch's training. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994, was named by The Ring in 1997 the best trainer of the past 75 years, and died October 10, 2001, aged 90.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0521. Edge disposition: a student_of edge from Joe Frazier (CTL-E-6005) to Futch is EMITTED — schema.json admits student_of Person→Person, the direction is fighter→trainer, and the IBHOF biographical record documents Futch working with Frazier from 1966 and succeeding Durham in 1973. Ali disposition: the 'four of the five men to defeat Muhammad Ali' claim is carried ONLY in that exact attributed form (Frazier, Norton, Holmes, Berbick); no stronger 'his fighters beat Ali four times' phrasing is used, because Norton and Holmes's wins came across multiple bouts and the sourced claim is about four fighters, not four fights. Cross-lane disposition: Ken Norton, Bob Foster and Riddick Bowe are built in sibling lanes of this packet — connections are carried in prose here and NO edges are emitted to temp ids outside this lane; the head is asked to add student_of edges (Norton → Futch, Foster → Futch, Bowe → Futch) at assembly. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Futch is the strategist of the Ali era — the trainer who solved the era's greatest fighter with two different heavyweights — and the Manila stoppage is the record's conscience: he is remembered as much for protecting Frazier as for beating Ali.
