Combined Graph record U-07977 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-7105.

Andre Michael Ward, born February 23, 1984, in San Francisco and fighting out of Oakland, California, authored, in the International Boxing Hall of Fame's words, an amateur career of 115 wins and 5 losses that culminated in the light-heavyweight gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics — making him, as Team USA records, the last American male boxer to win Olympic gold. Trained throughout his career by Virgil Hunter, Ward won unified world titles in two divisions: at super middleweight, where he held the WBA, WBC, The Ring and lineal championships, and at light heavyweight, where in 2016 he outpointed the undefeated Sergey Kovalev to take the WBA, IBF and WBO titles and stopped Kovalev in their 2017 rematch. Fighting as 'S.O.G.' — Son of God — he then retired at the top of the sport with the undefeated professional record the Hall states: 32 wins, no losses, 16 by knockout. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2021, in his first year of eligibility.

The record

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0490. Firsts disposition: 'last American male boxer to win Olympic gold' is carried in Team USA's dated form (Athens 2004); it remains true as of this record's access date because no American man has won Olympic boxing gold since, a status the description states through the 2004 anchor rather than as an open-ended claim. Totals: the undefeated 32-0 (16 KOs) is stated exactly as the International Boxing Hall of Fame states it. Identity: Andre Michael Ward of San Francisco/Oakland; 'S.O.G.' stands for 'Son of God.' No contested claims required disposition. Blocked edge: trainer Virgil Hunter is not in the live graph — the training relationship is carried in prose only. Blocked edge: Ward's documented study of Roy Jones Jr.'s and Bernard Hopkins's styles is influence, not a teacher–student relationship — no student_of edge minted.
