Errol Spence Jr., born March 3, 1990, on Long Island, New York, and raised in DeSoto, Texas, represented the United States at the 2012 London Olympics before turning professional. Fighting as 'The Truth,' he traveled to Sheffield, England, in May 2017 and stopped Kell Brook in the eleventh round to win the IBF welterweight title, then unified the division in stages: a September 2019 split decision over Shawn Porter added the WBC title, and an April 2022 stoppage of Yordenis Ugás added the WBA title, leaving him holding three of the four major welterweight championships. Between those unifications, in October 2019, Spence was seriously injured in a single-car crash in Dallas — ejected from his Ferrari, he was treated in intensive care but, as The Sweet Science records, escaped without broken bones — and he returned fourteen months later to outpoint Danny García. The long-awaited undisputed fight with Terence Crawford came on July 29, 2023, in Las Vegas, where Crawford stopped him in the ninth round, his first professional defeat. After almost three years away, Spence returned in Australia in July 2026, lost a unanimous decision to Tim Tszyu, and announced his retirement in the ring, finishing, as the New York Post records, at 28 wins and 2 losses after beginning 28–0 with 22 knockouts.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0493. Currency disposition: this record is current through the 2026 season as the sources state — the July 2026 comeback loss to Tim Tszyu in Australia and Spence's in-ring retirement announcement are carried from the New York Post's July 26, 2026 report; his era is therefore stated as living (1990–present) with a completed career, not as an active reign. The 2019 crash is stated factually and briefly, exactly as sourced (single-car crash, Dallas, October 10, 2019; intensive care; no broken bones; returned in fourteen months); the DWI charge reported in some accounts is not carried, as the two principal sources relied on here do not require it. Totals split as the sources state them: 28-0 (22 KOs) entering the Crawford fight; final 28-2 after the Crawford and Tszyu losses. Identity: Errol Spence Jr. of Long Island/DeSoto, 'The Truth'; not the cricketer of the same first name who appears in unrelated Commons files. Blocked edge: Terence Crawford is homed in the live graph (CTL-E-6000), but the 2023 undisputed fight is a bout only — prose, no edge.
