Combined Graph record U-08003 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-7131.

Daniel Cormier (born March 20, 1979, in Lafayette, Louisiana) is an American retired mixed martial artist and broadcaster who came to MMA from the top of Olympic wrestling. Cormier placed fourth in freestyle wrestling at the 2004 Athens Olympics and was named captain of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, but kidney failure caused by his weight cut forced him out of the Beijing Games before he could compete. He won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012, moved to the UFC, and — after losing his first title challenge to Jon Jones at UFC 182 — won the vacant light heavyweight title at UFC 187 in May 2015 by submitting Anthony Johnson. His rivalry with Jones defined the division: at UFC 214 in July 2017 Jones knocked him out, but the result was overturned to a no-contest and the title restored to Cormier after Jones tested positive for turinabol. On July 7, 2018, Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 to add the heavyweight title, becoming the second fighter to hold two UFC titles simultaneously and the first to defend titles in both divisions. He retired after losing the Miocic trilogy bout at UFC 252 in August 2020 with a 22–3 record and one no-contest, and entered the UFC Hall of Fame's Modern Wing in 2022.

The record

Notes

The packet brief named Olympics.com as the wrestling authority; its athlete profile was not retrievable in this session, and USA Wrestling's official site serves as the wrestling authority in its place — flagged here rather than papered over. The UFC 214 overturn is stated as the official record stands. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Cormier's career is the strongest answer to what an Olympic wrestler can become in MMA; that his defining rivalry was interrupted by his opponent's positive test is carried here as fact, not grievance.
