  • Dr. Daniel Hale Williams founded Provident Hospital in 1891 as the first Black-owned, non-segregated hospital in the United States, with an attached training school for Black nurses. VERIFIED
  • In the summer of 1893 Williams performed one of the first successful open-heart (pericardial) surgeries at Provident. VERIFIED
  • Its nursing school became the country's top Black nurse-training program, creating employment for Black nurses through its own visiting-nurse service when white agencies refused to hire them. VERIFIED
  • Provident closed in 1987 and reopened in 1993 as Provident Hospital of Cook County, continuing public care on the South Side. VERIFIED
