Chicago Steppin'
Verified evidence grade of this record
Smooth partner dance created and sustained by Black Chicago: an eight-count, close-embrace style danced to soul, R&B, and steppers' sets in the city's ballrooms, clubs, and union halls. Grew out of the bop in the 1970s and is kept as living heritage through weekly sets, classes, and the World's Largest Steppers Contest. DJ Sam Chatman is credited in practitioner testimony and ABC7 reporting with coining the term 'steppin'' for the style.
