Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer

CTL-E-0620 · Technology · 1980

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

The Roland TR-808 drum machine (released 1980) was a foundational instrument of Chicago house — documented in the equipment history of Jesse Saunders' 'On & On' (1983–84). Chicago producers adopted the 808's deep bass drum as the rhythmic signature of house, a use-pattern distinct from its original design as a practice accompaniment.
