Technics SL-1200 turntable

CTL-E-0622 · Technology · 1972

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

The Technics SL-1200 direct-drive turntable (introduced 1972) became the standard DJ instrument of Chicago house — the hardware basis of the Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy club sets. The 1200's pitch control and torque made beat-matching and extended blends physically possible, underwriting the Chicago DJ-as-producer practice.
