CTL-E-1367 · Neighborhood · 1940s-1968 (destruction); disinvestment continuing; c. 1940s-1968 (peak); destroyed April 1968; partial rebuilding 1970s-1980s

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

The West Side's Black commercial spine (East Garfield Park/Austin/Lawndale). Through the 1960s it was dominated by white property owners and white-owned businesses picketed by civil-rights activists for discriminatory hiring; after the April 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., more than 100 Madison Street businesses were destroyed in riots, followed by stalled rebuilding promises. Named Black-owned firms of the corridor are a documented gap.
