VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Russell Lee (1903–1986) was an American documentary photographer, born in Ottawa, Illinois, who became the most prolific photographer of the Farm Security Administration. Trained as a chemical engineer at Lehigh University, he left chemistry for painting and then photography, and in the fall of 1936 joined Roy Stryker's federal photography project. Living out of his car, he photographed in 29 states between 1936 and 1942 and produced some 19,000 of the roughly 63,000 prints in the Library of Congress's FSA collection — more than twice the output of any other photographer on the team, on which he was the longest-tenured member. He was known for technical innovation, including direct-flash photography indoors, and for sustained photographic essays on single communities. In 1941 he turned that method on Chicago's South Side, producing the apartment-house interiors, church processionals, tavern scenes, and 47th Street shoeshine stands that now anchor CultureTechLens's Cited Photo Archive.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-15 (packet chicago-first). Subtype artist (documentary photographer); 'journalist' was considered — Lee was a salaried federal documentary photographer, not a newsroom photojournalist, and CTL's archive holds him as a maker. CTL-internal count: 32 Lee-credited photo records on the Cited Photo Archive page (counted from the built site, 2026-10-15).
