VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Jack Delano (1914–1997) was a Ukrainian-born American photographer and composer. Born Jacob Ovcharov in Voroshilovka, near Kyiv, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1923 and graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1937. He joined the Farm Security Administration as a photographer in 1940 and continued under its successor agency, the Office of War Information. In the winter of 1942–43, on a six-month assignment to document the wartime railroad industry, Delano worked mostly in Chicago — the nation's railroad hub — producing some 3,000 photographs, nearly 2,000 of them in and around the city: yard and shop crews, railroaders' portraits, and his celebrated color view inside Chicago Union Station. A 1941 FSA trip to Puerto Rico changed the course of his life; he settled there permanently in 1946 and built a second career as a composer drawing on Puerto Rican folk material.

The record

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-15 (packet chicago-first). Subtype artist, as Lee. Delano's FSA start year (1940) and OWI continuation per Trains Magazine and the Reevy biography record. CTL-internal count: 4 Delano-credited photo records on the Cited Photo Archive page (counted from the built site, 2026-10-15). No collaborated_with edge to Lee is staged: the two were unit colleagues, and no located source documents a direct collaboration — the shared FSA edges carry the relationship honestly.
