VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation headquartered in the Marquette Building in Chicago, Illinois. It was established in 1970 by insurance magnate John D. MacArthur and his wife, Catherine T. MacArthur, and made its first grants in 1978, the year of John D. MacArthur's death; it is now among the largest private foundations in the United States, with an endowment of about $9.2 billion (2024). The foundation is best known for the MacArthur Fellows Program, begun in 1981, which gives no-strings-attached awards to exceptionally creative individuals, and for its $100 million 100&Change competition. Its president is John Palfrey. In CultureTechLens research the foundation appears as a funder-actor: it was one of four foundations whose consortium purchased the Johnson Publishing Company photographic archive in 2019 for $30 million, preserving it ahead of its July 2022 transfer to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Getty.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-15 under CTL-GOV-006; Gate A clear with one documented near-match: CTL-E-4993 is an Event (a City Club of Chicago program about the Fellows Program) — DISTINCT from the foundation itself, which had no record; the scan's own Gate-A note flags the same distinction. Gate B met (4 sources incl. the foundation's official site as primary). CTL treatment: funder-actor in CTL-RD-BIZ-000001 research (2019 Johnson Publishing archive consortium purchase); named in 17 CTL research files per the 2026-10-15 corpus gap scan. Statistics carried: endowment $9.2 billion (2024, foundation-reported); Fellows Program since 1981; fellowship award $800,000 over five years (foundation-published figure, checked 2026-10-15). Founding-date note: the Columbia Encyclopedia dates the foundation to 1978 — that is the year grantmaking began, after John D. MacArthur's death; the foundation was established in 1970, and the abstract carries both dates with their distinct meanings rather than blending them. IMPORTANT: this record documents the foundation's role inside CTL research only; it asserts and implies no funding relationship between the MacArthur Foundation and CultureTechLens (see the packet's Curator's Judgment). Photo slot: HELD — no specific cleared file verified in this pass; intake lead: Wikimedia Commons carries CC-licensed photography of Chicago's Marquette Building, the foundation's headquarters; the foundation's logos are trademarked marks and are not photo candidates.
