Chris Brown
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor, born Christopher Maurice Brown on May 5, 1989, in Tappahannock, Virginia, whose singing-and-dancing virtuosity made him a central, and contested, figure in 21st-century R&B. Signed to Jive Records as a teenager, he released his self-titled debut album in 2005; it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and its lead single Run It! topped the Billboard Hot 100. Exclusive (2007) extended his run, but his career was ruptured in 2009, when he pleaded guilty to felony assault of his then-girlfriend Rihanna and was sentenced to probation and community service, a matter of public record that has shadowed his reception since. He rebuilt commercially with F.A.M.E. (2011), his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album, which won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, followed by Fortune (2012), also a chart-topper, and a long sequence of albums, collaborations, and arena tours that sustained his standing as a live performer through the 2010s and 2020s.

Notes
Statistics: Two Grammy wins from 26 nominations as of October 15, 2026, including Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. (2012 ceremony) and for 11:11 (Deluxe) at the 67th Grammy Awards in 2025 (Recording Academy artist page, GRAMMY.com, accessed October 15, 2026) · Debut album Chris Brown peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and Run It! topped the Billboard Hot 100 (Recording Academy artist page, GRAMMY.com) · CONFLICT NOTED: the Recording Academy bio line gives his birthplace as Tappahannock, Washington; every other source consulted, including his standard biographies, gives Tappahannock, Virginia, and the record follows Virginia, treating the Academy line as a typographical error · The 2009 guilty plea and sentence are stated from the public record as summarized in biographical sources consulted October 2026 · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: CTL records Chris Brown whole: the dance lineage from Michael Jackson is real and visible in every performance, and so is the harm in his record, which this entry does not soften or omit. His catalog and stagecraft belong in the archive of modern R&B; the archive's job is documentation with both eyes open, not absolution. · Photo slot: CLEARED CANDIDATE — Wikimedia Commons File:Chris Brown (6936274970).jpg, Eva Rinaldi, CC BY-SA 2.0, license verified from Commons API metadata on 2026-10-15; direct URL https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Chris_Brown_%286936274970%29.jpg; not downloaded — visual pass follows merge per standing pattern.
