Claudette Colvin
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
Claudette Colvin was a Montgomery schoolgirl whose refusal, at fifteen, to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger on March 2, 1955, came nine months before Rosa Parks's famous arrest in the same city and the same bus system. Dragged from the bus, handcuffed, and jailed, she had been studying Black history at school and later recalled feeling held in her seat by the examples of earlier freedom fighters. Movement leaders, weighing her youth and circumstances, chose Parks as the public face of protest, and Colvin's name faded from popular memory for decades. Her courage, however, entered the legal record directly: she became one of the four plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, the federal case that ended segregated bus seating in Montgomery, affirmed by the Supreme Court in 1956. She later moved to New York, worked for decades as a nurse's aide, raised a family largely out of the spotlight, and saw her juvenile record expunged in 2021. Recognition arrived late but fully, through biography, honors, and renewed teaching of her story. Colvin died in Texas on January 13, 2026, aged eighty-six, and this record is written in tribute: the teenager the movement set aside was, in the end, one of its decisive witnesses.
