VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Afeni Shakur, born Alice Faye Williams in Lumberton, North Carolina, came north to the Bronx as a girl and came of age in Harlem street life before finding political purpose in the Black Panther Party, which she joined in 1968 after hearing its leaders speak. She organized in the Harlem chapter, worked in the party's community programs, and wrote for its publications. In 1969 she was arrested among the Panther 21, charged in a sweeping New York conspiracy case. Jailed for eleven months and pregnant, she chose to represent herself at trial, cross-examined key witnesses, and was acquitted on all counts in May 1971. Weeks later she gave birth to her son, Tupac Amaru Shakur, named for a Peruvian revolutionary. Her later years held addiction, recovery, and relentless work: she enrolled her children in arts programs wherever the family landed, insisting the arts could save children, and after Tupac's killing in 1996 she guarded and built his legacy, founding the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in 1997 to fund youth arts and Amaru Entertainment to steward his unreleased work. She died in Sausalito, California, on May 2, 2016, aged sixty-nine. Her flowers here honor the revolutionary who defended herself, and the mother who turned grief into an institution for other people's children.

The record

Notes

Statistics: Born January 10, 1947, Lumberton, North Carolina; joined Black Panther Party 1968; Panther 21 defendant, acquitted May 1971 after 11 months jailed; son Tupac born June 1971, one month after acquittal; Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation founded 1997; died May 2, 2016, aged 69, Sausalito (AP; Freedom Archives, accessed 2026-10-15). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — Afeni Shakur is recorded first as an actor in her own history — self-defended, acquitted, unbowed — and only then as a famous mother. Her flowers are for the foundation-building second act as much as the trial. · Photo slot: CLEARED — Wikimedia Commons File:Afeni Shakur.jpg, AidaGagnier, CC BY-SA 2.0, verified via Commons API 2026-10-15; direct URL https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d9/Afeni_Shakur.jpg; master in packet photos/afeni-shakur.jpg.
