VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Viola Desmond built a business before she made history. Trained as a beautician, the Halifax-born entrepreneur opened her own salon and founded the Desmond School of Beauty Culture, mentoring young Black women across Nova Scotia and the wider Maritimes at a time when Black women were largely shut out of professional training. On November 8, 1946, stranded in New Glasgow when her car broke down, she went to a film at the Roseland Theatre and took a main-floor seat after being sold a cheaper balcony ticket. Ordered to move to the section reserved for Black patrons, she refused. She was dragged out, jailed overnight, and convicted of tax evasion over the one-cent difference between the two seats — a charge that exposed the machinery of segregation in supposedly tolerant Canada. Her appeal failed, and the conviction stood in her lifetime, but her case galvanized Black Nova Scotian organizing and became one of Canada's most publicized confrontations with anti-Black discrimination. Desmond died in New York on February 7, 1965. Canada answered late: a posthumous free pardon in 2010, the first of its kind in the country, and in 2018 her portrait on the ten-dollar banknote, making her the first Canadian-born woman to appear alone on a Canadian bank note.

The record

Notes

Statistics: Born July 6, 1914, Halifax; Roseland Theatre arrest November 8, 1946; convicted over a one-cent tax difference and fined $26 including costs; posthumous free pardon 2010 (first in Canada); $10 banknote issued 2018; died February 7, 1965, New York (Britannica; Government of Canada, accessed 2026-10-15). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — Desmond's flowers are for two courages at once: the entrepreneur who trained other women, and the citizen who would not move. CTL honors her as a business builder whose dignity forced a country to see itself. · Photo slot: CLEARED — Wikimedia Commons File:Viola Desmond.jpg, Unknown author, Public domain, verified via Commons API 2026-10-15; direct URL https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a9/Viola_Desmond.jpg; master in packet photos/viola-desmond.jpg.
