Do the Right Thing
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Do the Right Thing, written, produced, and directed by Spike Lee and released by Universal Pictures on June 30, 1989, after a Cannes premiere that May 19, unfolds over the hottest day of the summer on one Bedford-Stuyvesant block, where the wall of photographs in Sal's pizzeria — famous Italian-Americans only — becomes the argument the neighborhood has been postponing. In 1999, in its first year of eligibility, the Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry — among the very few films honored that early, an institutional verdict delivered a decade out. The Academy gave it two nominations, for Lee's original screenplay and for Danny Aiello's supporting performance; its absence from the Best Picture slate was protested from the ceremony's own stage and remains a reference-point snub in awards history. In Sight and Sound's 2022 critics' poll of the greatest films ever made, it ranked twenty-fourth. For this graph, Do the Right Thing is the film shelf's hinge: the work that announced the modern Black American cinema to the world and has never left the argument since.
Notes
Statistics: Universal Pictures, 1989; National Film Registry 1999 (first year of eligibility). Staged edge: authored_by Spike Lee (CTL-E-1754). · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Fight the Power over the opening credits, and the credits themselves an argument about who gets on the wall. The graph's film shelf needed this record the way Sal's wall needed Smiley's photograph — as the correction, placed by hand. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
