Black Panther (film)

CTL-E-5475 · Work · film · 2018

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler for Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, premiered on January 29, 2018, and opened in the United States that February 16, carrying the Marvel apparatus to Wakanda — an African nation imagined as never colonized, its technology and tradition fused — and to the argument between T'Challa's inheritance and Killmonger's indictment of it. It was the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to win an Oscar, taking three from seven nominations: costume design for Ruth Carter, production design for Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart, and original score for Ludwig Göransson. Carter and Beachler were the first Black winners in their Oscar categories. It grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, stood as 2018's highest-grossing film domestically, and at release was the highest-grossing film ever directed by a Black filmmaker. The graph files it as the blockbuster shelf's summit — the point where the Black cultural imagination, at industrial scale, became the industry's center of gravity for a season.

The record

Notes

Statistics: Marvel Studios / Disney, 2018; 3 Academy Awards from 7 nominations; over $1.3 billion worldwide. Namesake adjudication (Gate A): description hits were the Black Panther Party and Rainbow Coalition records, not the film. Staged edge: authored_by Ryan Coogler (CTL-E-1764), the film's director. · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: Wakanda was a design argument before it was a place: what does African modernity look like uncolonized? A billion dollars of tickets said the question was the world's. The record gives Carter and Beachler their firsts in the same breath as the gross — the craft is the citation. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
