Glory (1989 film)
PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record
Glory, directed by Edward Zwick from Kevin Jarre's screenplay — drawn from Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel, Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush, and the letters of Robert Gould Shaw — was released by Tri-Star Pictures in limited release on December 15, 1989, and wide that February 16, 1990. It tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, one of the Union Army's earliest Black regiments, from its formation through the assault on Fort Wagner — the same regiment whose war this graph's Civil War record (CTL-E-5409) frames. From five Academy Award nominations it won three, including Best Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington — his first Oscar. In 2025 the Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry, thirty-six years after release, the institution's confirmation of the film's standing as the Civil War's defining Black screen narrative. The graph files Glory as the historical-epic shelf's anchor: the film through which most Americans first met the 54th, and the reason the regiment's monument stands in the culture where it does.

Notes
Statistics: Tri-Star Pictures, 1989; 3 Academy Awards from 5 nominations; National Film Registry 2025 — the research file flagged this selection for re-verification at build time, and it was re-verified against the Library of Congress's own registry listing before being asserted here. · Curator's Judgment: DRAFT — for founder review: The 54th Massachusetts waited 126 years for its film and the film waited 36 for its Registry plaque; both waits are in the record. Glory is filed as what it demonstrably is — the regiment's second monument, the one in light. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
