UrbanGeekz 50 is an annual list published by UrbanGeekz, a digital news platform, under the full title UrbanGeekz 50: Gamechangers in Tech, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. The CTL record classifies it as an annual list, names its issuer as UrbanGeekz, and names its curator as Kunbi Tinuoye, UrbanGeekz's founder and chief executive. UrbanGeekz's own announcement confirms each element: it states that UrbanGeekz has officially published its third annual UrbanGeekz 50 list for 2025, highlighting leaders building the products, platforms, and movements shaping today's innovation economy, and the full list page is signed as curated by Kunbi Tinuoye, Founder and CEO of UrbanGeekz, with input from independent industry leaders. The publisher explains its method in the same place: drawing on its body of work and informed by input from independent industry leaders, it curated the group, and, using a distinct set of data points, assessed each honoree's reach, impact, and influence. The 2025 edition is therefore the third in a series, not a one-off ranking, and its authority rests on editorial curation plus outside industry input, a method the list states on its face.
The structure of the 2025 list is ten verticals. UrbanGeekz names them as Software; Venture Capital; FinTech; AI and Machine Learning; Digital Media; Food, Climate and Health; Business-to-Consumer; Community Builders and Ecosystem Warriors; Africa; and Canada. The publisher notes one deliberate change for 2025: it switched out Europe for Canada, after a conversation with a United States-based ecosystem leader about the emerging tech hub next door. The CTL verification of the list, completed against UrbanGeekz's own category pages, located all fifty honorees across the ten category pages, with counts of eight in Venture Capital, five among Ecosystem Warriors, seven in FinTech, five in Digital Media, four in Software, five in AI, five in Food, Climate and Health, four in Business-to-Consumer, three in Africa, and four in Canada. The full table on the main list page gives each honoree a company, an industry, a city, and a country, which is what makes the list usable as a reference record rather than a headline.
The Venture Capital section names eight investors in the table: Mercedes Bent of Lightspeed Ventures in San Francisco; Charles Hudson of Precursor Ventures in San Francisco; Jewel Burks Solomon of Collab Capital in Atlanta; Kanyi Maqubela of Kindred Ventures in San Francisco; Monique Woodard of Cake Ventures in San Francisco; Kobie Fuller of Upfront Ventures in Los Angeles; Dan Kihanya of Path Ahead Ventures in Seattle; and Erin Harkless Moore of Pivotal Ventures, listed at Columbia. UrbanGeekz's category page profiles Bent in detail: a venture partner at Lightspeed since 2019, she began in finance roles at the Federal Reserve and Goldman Sachs, managed two consumer companies including helping scale one from two million to one hundred million dollars in revenue in four years, founded two startups of her own, led multiple investments across the Latin America region, and focuses on early-stage consumer fintech, holding an MBA and a master's degree in education from Stanford and an undergraduate degree in behavioral economics from Harvard. The main announcement likewise singles Bent out as a standout investor playing a defining role in venture capital by backing early-stage founders building the next generation of consumer and fintech companies.
The Ecosystem Warriors section names Regina Gwynn of Black Women Talk Tech in New York City; Donnie Beamer Jr. of the City of Atlanta; Kathryn Finney of Genius Guild, listed at Chicago; Justin E. Samuels of RenderATL in Atlanta; and TK Petersen of The Gathering Spot in Atlanta. The announcement adds sourced texture for two of them: Samuels is described as a leading culture-and-tech convener in Atlanta, best known for building RenderATL into a fast-growing conference with national draw and a cornerstone of Atlanta Tech Week, while also working as a Mailchimp technologist; and Petersen is recognized as co-founder of The Gathering Spot, launched in 2016 with Ryan Wilson, an inaugural UrbanGeekz 50 honoree. Finney's Chicago listing gives the list a direct CTL home-city connection. The remaining sections carry the same documentary form: FinTech is led in the table by Rodney Williams of SoLo Funds, whom the announcement names among the year's exceptional leaders; Software includes Abel Mengistu, co-founder of FlutterFlow, profiled on the Software category page as a former Google senior software engineer for five years, working on Google Maps and Google ATAP and Hardware, who co-founded the no-code and low-code platform in October 2020 in Mountain View; AI and Machine Learning includes Timnit Gebru of DAIR, also named in the announcement's opening group of trailblazers, and Claudette McGowan, chief executive of Toronto-based Protexxa, whom the announcement calls one of the most successful venture-backed female founders in North America, driving conversations around digital trust and cyber resilience, listed in the table under Canada. The Africa entries in the table are Tosin Eniolorunda of Moniepoint Inc. in Lagos, Nigeria, described in the announcement as one of Africa's most influential fintech leaders, whose company powers digital payments and banking infrastructure for millions of businesses; Régis Bamba of Djamo in Abidjan, listed as Ivory Coast in the table; and Olu Oyinsan of Oui Capital in Lagos. The Canada entries are McGowan, Tiffany Callender of FACE Coalition in Montreal, Efosa KC Obano of Black Founders Network in Toronto, and Lise Birikundavyi of BKR Capital in Toronto. The stored CTL note's geography, the United States, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Canada, matches that table exactly.
The list did not begin in 2025. Coverage of the inaugural edition by People of Color in Tech records that UrbanGeekz unveiled UrbanGeekz 50 as a list of Black disruptors leaving a mark on the innovation economy, presented by Atlanta-based MHR International, spotlighting gamechangers in tech, venture capital, and entrepreneurship and set to become an annual tradition; that first edition's largest category was Community Builders and Ecosystem Warriors, and its categories already included Venture Capital, AI and Machine Learning, FinTech, Digital Media, Food, Climate and Health, and Business-to-Consumer. A second annual edition followed, and the 2025 list is the third.
For CTL, with degree 50, this node functions as a dated census of Black tech leadership at a moment when such leadership is otherwise documented mainly in scattered company biographies and funding announcements. A single list, with named curatorship, a stated assessment of reach, impact, and influence, ten stable categories, and a full table of company, city, and country for each honoree, converts fifty individual careers into a comparable record: who held venture roles in 2025, which ecosystem builders were recognized in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Toronto, and Montreal, and how the field's geography extended from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Lagos and Abidjan. That is why the graph attaches each honoree by an Appears On edge rather than summarizing them inside this entry: the list is the document, and the people are the evidence it organizes.
