Jean Grae (born Tsidi Ibrahim on November 26, 1976, in Cape Town, South Africa) is the underground's lyricist's lyricist — born to South African jazz royalty, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin, and raised in Manhattan's Hotel Chelsea. She studied vocal performance at LaGuardia High School, came up in the group Natural Resource under the name What? What?, and took her solo name from the X-Men's Jean Grey. Her debut Attack of the Attacking Things (2002) and This Week (2004) built a cult on polysyllabic, dry-witted writing; Jeanius (2008), produced by 9th Wonder, drew Robert Christgau's praise on NPR for its "rapidity, clarity and idiomatic cadence." In 2018 she released Everything's Fine with Quelle Chris, her partner, a satire of American anxiety that extended her second career as a writer and humorist. CultureTechLens profiled Grae in Short #167.
