Robin Harris, born Robin Hughes Harris on August 30, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, was an American comedian and actor best known for his “Bébé's Kids” routine. The son of Earl Harris, a welder, and Mattie Harris, a factory seamstress, he was born at the family home at 4640 South Drexel Avenue; the family moved to Los Angeles in 1961, where he attended Manual Arts High School, and he went on to Ottawa University in Kansas. Harris debuted at The Comedy Store in 1980 and worked as master of ceremonies at the Comedy Act Theater in the mid-1980s. His film roles came in a rush: a bartender in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988), Sweet Dick Willie in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989), Harlem Nights (1989), and Pop in House Party (1990), a performance that earned a posthumous Independent Spirit Award nomination. On March 18, 1990, hours after a sold-out performance in his hometown, Harris died of heart failure at Chicago's Four Seasons Hotel, aged 36. The Hudlin brothers' animated Bébé's Kids (1992) carried his signature routine to the screen after his death.
