Ice Cube (born O'Shea Jackson on June 15, 1969, in Los Angeles, California) is the rapper, songwriter, actor and producer who wrote much of N.W.A's landmark work and then built one of hip-hop's most durable solo and film careers. After the group C.I.A. (1986), he co-founded N.W.A in 1987 with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre and wrote most of the lyrics on Straight Outta Compton (1988), the album that carried gangsta rap to a national audience. Following a dispute over the group's management and his earnings, he left N.W.A — reference works differ on whether the departure falls in late 1989 or 1990; the record prints the variance — and released the solo albums AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990), Death Certificate (1991) and The Predator (1992). On screen he debuted as Doughboy in Boyz n the Hood (1991) and co-wrote and starred in Friday (1995), which grew into a franchise. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A in 2016.
