Sid McCoy (born Sidney Charles McCoy, October 24, 1922, in Chicago; died November 5, 2009, in Los Angeles) was a Chicago disc jockey, record producer, and television announcer. He is best documented in two lanes. In the first, he was the principal jazz producer for Chicago's Vee-Jay Records from the late 1950s into the early 1960s, producing sessions by Wayne Shorter, Wynton Kelly, Lee Morgan, and Eddie Harris. In the second, he was the longtime announcer of Soul Train, Don Cornelius's Chicago-born dance program, a role he held across the show's syndicated decades alongside acting appearances in television series of the era. Between those lanes sits his Chicago radio work, remembered by listeners as "The Real McCoy," a late-night jazz program heard first on WGES (1390 AM) and then on WCFL, where he later co-hosted with Yvonne Daniels; listener recollection, gathered in radio-history archives, credits his broadcasts with introducing a generation of Chicago-area listeners to modern jazz. The graph's WVON packet found no documented WVON affiliation for McCoy, and none is claimed on this record.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Named Remainders & Further Gaps, Batch A) — not merged; awaits founder merge go. Gate A: PASS — no graph record under the name. Projects model on Wesley South (CTL-E-1200): BMI-002/RELP-001. Vital status: DECEASED — died November 5, 2009, Los Angeles (The TV IV); a cause of death (cardiac arrest) circulates in a single low-authority Q&A source (Answers.com) and is NOT carried. Verification is PROVISIONAL: the Vee-Jay production and Soul Train lanes are verified by an authoritative music reference (AllMusic), but the WGES/WCFL station-level detail rests on listener recollections in a radio-history archive, not on a station history or obituary — the description labels that evidence for what it is. NO WVON edge is staged: per the brief and the packet, his WVON tie was below the sourcing floor; his documented stations are WGES and WCFL, neither of which holds a graph record, so no station edge is possible. Edges staged instead on sourced affiliations the matrix allows: affiliated_with to CTL-E-0166 (Vee-Jay Records) and CTL-E-1184 (Soul Train). Photo: HELD. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: No file-page-level PHOTO-001 license verification completed at staging and no cleared photograph of McCoy was | chart = FILLED (CTL-created timeline built only from this record's sourced facts.) | video = HELD (No CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map catalog (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 entries, searched by name st) | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging; slot held with reason.)
