Salt-N-Pepa is an American hip-hop group formed in New York City in 1985, composed of Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton) and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper) — each of whom already holds a record in this graph. Their debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious (1986), sold more than one million copies in the United States, making them the first female rap act to earn both gold and platinum RIAA certification, and its single 'Push It' (1987) reached the Billboard Hot 100 top twenty. Blacks' Magic (1990) carried 'Let's Talk About Sex,' and Very Necessary (1993), with 'Shoop' and 'Whatta Man' with En Vogue, sold more than five million copies domestically and remained the highest-selling rap album by a female act until 1998. In 1995 the group won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for 'None of Your Business,' a first for a female rap act. They received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025 under the Musical Influence Award, reported as the first female hip-hop act so inducted. Worldwide sales exceed fifteen million records.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Wave 7, Batch C) — not merged. Gate A: no Salt-N-Pepa group record in the live graph (3,443 entities), 2026-10-16 — ABSENT, while all three members are homed. Vital status: GROUP ACTIVE and all three members LIVING — supported by the 2025 Hall of Fame induction and 2026 tour billing in the sources above. Typing: Person/group per PPL-001 precedent. Edges staged: Salt (CTL-E-5667), Pepa (CTL-E-5700) and DJ Spinderella (CTL-E-5701) each related_to → Salt-N-Pepa with role in evidence, completing the Wave 5/6 person-to-person wiring. Group 'firsts' are attributed to the group record here, per brief. NUANCE SHOWN: one source phrases the 1995 Grammy as making them 'one of the first female rap acts to win a Grammy, along with Queen Latifah, who won later during the same ceremony' — the ordering in that account is consistent with the first-act claim carried in the description; the wording difference is recorded, not blended. Photo: HELD (see media). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person/group records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: No Commons/LOC file page stating a license was verified for this subject in this pass; slot held rather than f | chart = FILLED | video = HELD (No Shorts Link Map row bills Salt-N-Pepa as its subject. Short #159 bills Salt (CTL-E-5667) as a person, not t) | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared audio for this subject exists at staging; the recorded catalog is label copyrig)
