The Tri-State Defender is a weekly African-American newspaper published in Memphis, Tennessee, serving Memphis and nearby areas of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee — the three states of its name. It was founded in 1951 by John H. Sengstacke, owner of the Chicago Defender, who saw Memphis as a market where Black newspapers had repeatedly failed to take root; Sengstacke and editor Lewis O. Swingler, formerly of the rival Memphis World, published the first edition in November 1951, a 20-page issue carrying a ten-point program, and Swingler served as editor in chief until 1955. The paper became part of Sengstacke's newspaper chain alongside the Chicago Defender, the Michigan Chronicle, and later the Pittsburgh Courier, and billed itself as the Mid-South's alternative newspaper. In 2013 it was purchased locally from Real Times Media by the Tri-State Defender Board of Directors, and it continues publishing from Memphis.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 1 — 747 Program, Wave 8; first Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): no Tri-State Defender entity in the live graph at 3,523 entities (exact / normalized / alias + token containment); ID CTL-E-5853 free. Token-containment hits on 'Defender' resolve to the Chicago Defender (CTL-E-0266) and its related records — a different, homed paper, not this Memphis title. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Tier 4 — corpus scan sample, readiness rank 2123 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json ranked clean survivor #173).
