Sengstacke Enterprises was the Black newspaper chain built by John H. Sengstacke around the Chicago Defender, which he took over in 1940 and from which he also founded the National Newspaper Publishers Association. From 1965 Sengstacke assembled the chain outward from Chicago: the Pittsburgh Courier was purchased and reopened as the New Pittsburgh Courier in 1967, and the Memphis Tri-State Defender and Detroit's Michigan Chronicle joined the Chicago Defender in the group. When Sengstacke died in May 1997, Sengstacke Enterprises held those four papers, and congressional tributes entered into the Record in 1997 and 2000 describe the chain as his life's structure. In 2000, Editor & Publisher reported, the board of Sengstacke Enterprises Inc. voted to auction the Defender and the three weeklies under the pressure of an estate-tax bill of roughly three million dollars. The Defender survives as the flagship of Real Times Media.
