L. Alex Wilson (Lucious Alexander Wilson) was the editor and general manager of the Memphis Tri-State Defender and one of the Black press's defining correspondents of the civil rights era. He covered the Korean War for the Chicago Defender in 1950, led the Defender newspaper chain's coverage of the Emmett Till case in 1955, and hired Dorothy Butler Gilliam, who became a pioneering Black woman journalist. On September 23, 1957, covering the Little Rock Nine in Arkansas, Wilson was beaten by a white mob on camera — struck with a brick and choked — and refused to run, an image of press courage carried on national television. He later became editor of the Chicago Defender. The 1957 assault's injuries shadowed the rest of his life; he died in 1960 at 51, of Parkinson's disease that the sources tie to the beating's damage. His birth year is not independently sourced in the accounts read and is shown only as the arithmetic of his reported age at death.
