The Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) is a private research university in Chicago, created in 1940 by the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute. Armour grew from minister Frank Wakeley Gunsaulus's 1890 'Million Dollar Sermon' on the South Side: Philip Danforth Armour Sr. gave $1 million to found it, and when Armour Institute opened in 1893 it offered professional courses in engineering, chemistry, architecture, and library science. Lewis Institute, established in 1895 on Chicago's West Side from the estate of Allen C. Lewis, offered liberal arts as well as science and engineering to men and women. The two boards voted to merge on October 26, 1939, and a Cook County circuit court decision on April 23, 1940, solidified the creation of Illinois Tech. Its main campus stands at 10 West 35th Street in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, where Ludwig Mies van der Rohe directed the architecture program from 1938 to 1958 and designed much of the campus; part of the 120-acre campus entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
