Edwin Rosskam (1903–1985) was an American photographer, editor, and visual designer born in Munich to American parents, who came to Philadelphia in 1919 and studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before turning to photojournalism. The African American Registry's biographical record states that he joined the Farm Security Administration and worked under Roy Stryker, designing photo exhibitions and editing documentary picture books. His defining work for Black cultural history came in 1941, when he served as photo editor — credited with photo-direction — for 12 Million Black Voices, Richard Wright's folk history of Black America published by Viking Press, selecting FSA photographs to pair with Wright's text; the Morgan Library's catalogue record confirms the 1941 Viking first edition and that its photographs were selected from the files of the Farm Security Administration. Rosskam also photographed Black Chicago directly in 1941, work later gathered in Bronzeville: Black Chicago in Pictures, 1941–1943. With his wife and collaborator Louise Rosskam he later worked on the Standard Oil photography project and a documentary initiative for the government of Puerto Rico. He died on February 25, 1985, at his home in Roosevelt, New Jersey, aged 81.
