Doug Williams (born August 9, 1955, in Zachary, Louisiana) is a former National Football League quarterback whose name is fixed to one of the landmark performances in American sports. At Grambling State University, playing for coach Eddie Robinson, he guided the Tigers to a 36-7 record as a four-year starter, won three Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, was twice named Black College Player of the Year, and finished fourth in the 1977 Heisman Trophy voting. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him 17th overall in the 1978 NFL Draft, and he led Tampa Bay to the first three playoff appearances in team history. In Super Bowl XXII, on January 31, 1988, Williams threw for 340 yards and four touchdowns — all four in a single quarter — as Washington beat Denver 42-10. He was named Super Bowl MVP and became the first Black quarterback to both start and win a Super Bowl. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001, he later coached Grambling State and became a Washington team executive.
