Michael Reese Hospital, founded in 1881 at 2929 South Ellis Avenue in Chicago's Bronzeville, was for more than a century one of the city's major research and teaching hospitals and one of its great medical employers. Its campus grew to 48 acres on the near South Side. The hospital also carried a documented role in Black Chicago's professional formation: the University of Illinois Chicago's Mapping Care project records its place in training and employing Black nurses, including Frances Barge, who in 1973 became the first Black director of a nursing school there. The Reese campus held 1,008 beds in 1991. Decline ended in closure: patients were transferred to Mercy Hospital by the end of 2008, the campus was vacated in January 2009, and the hospital's official closure date was August 31, 2009. Demolition ran from October 2009 to 2013, leaving the Singer Pavilion as the sole surviving building; the site is now planned as Bronzeville Lakefront.
