Joe Louis (born Joseph Louis Barrow, May 13, 1914, LaFayette, Alabama; died April 12, 1981, Paradise, Nevada) was the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1937 to 1949 and the most consequential Black athlete of his century. Raised in Detroit, he won the 1934 national AAU light-heavyweight title and took the heavyweight crown from James J. Braddock on June 22, 1937, at Chicago's Comiskey Park, knocking Braddock out in the eighth round. Louis had lost to Germany's Max Schmeling in 1936; their rematch on June 22, 1938, before 70,043 at Yankee Stadium, ended in two minutes and four seconds of the first round and was read worldwide as democracy's answer to Nazi racial doctrine. Louis defended the title 25 times, a division record, and his reign made him a unifying national hero and the standard against which Black athletic greatness was measured for a generation.
