Jack Blackburn (born in Versailles, Kentucky in 1883, the son of a minister, according to the International Boxing Hall of Fame) had two careers. As a fighter, the Hall states, the roughly 135-pound Blackburn made good showings against Joe Gans and against Sam Langford, who outweighed him by 45 pounds, and fought Harry Greb after a manslaughter conviction arising from a January 1909 Philadelphia shooting — in which, the Hall states, he killed three people including his wife — had cost him four years and eight months of a ten-to-fifteen-year sentence. The Hall credits him with an official record of 38-3-12 with 50 no-decisions and notes he claimed 385 fights; later compilations credit far more wins, and the totals are carried here as the Hall states them. As a trainer he guided Sammy Mandell (1926) and Bud Taylor (1927) to titles, then built Joe Louis: the Hall quotes Louis, 'Chappie made a fighter out of me. He was my closest friend.' Blackburn initially predicted a Black heavyweight would get few opportunities. He died of a heart attack in 1942 and entered the Hall as a non-participant in 1992.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0443. Firsts disposition: none claimed. Exclusion disposition: as a fighter Blackburn was never given a title shot despite facing Gans and Langford — carried only in the Hall-sourced form that he made 'good showings' against champions while fighting larger men; his own Hall-quoted prediction that a Black heavyweight (Louis) would have few opportunities is carried as his stated view. Vitals splits carried, never blended: birth name Charles Henry (NKAA/Wikipedia) vs Charles Harvey (BoxRec); birth date May 20, 1883 (NKAA) — one IBRO study argues May 3, 1883; record 38-3-12/50 ND (IBHOF official) vs 99-26-19 in later compilations — description rides the IBHOF figure with attribution. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Blackburn is the rare record where the second career eclipses a genuinely formidable first one; the Hall honors the trainer, but the fighter who stood in with Langford at a 45-pound disadvantage belongs in the same frame.
