Combined Graph record U-07184 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-5942.

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit was founded in 1965 by Dr. Charles H. Wright, an obstetrician, together with thirty other founders, as the International Afro-American Museum; it opened in January 1966 at 1549 West Grand Boulevard. The museum's current home, a 125,000-square-foot facility at 315 East Warren Avenue, opened in 1997. Its collection holds more than 35,000 artifacts, and its core exhibition, And Still We Rise, spans 22,000 square feet. The museum houses the National Museum of the Tuskegee Airmen and produces the annual African World Festival. Its rotunda has served the nation's mourning: Rosa Parks lay in state there in 2005 and Aretha Franklin in 2018. The Wright is one of the largest African American history museums in the United States and the institutional anchor of Detroit's cultural center.
