Satchel Paige (Leroy Robert “Satchel” Paige, born July 7, 1906, Mobile, Alabama, per his birth certificate; died June 8, 1982, Kansas City) was the Negro leagues' greatest pitcher and its most famous showman, whose major-league chance came two decades late and still made history. He began in the Negro leagues in 1926–27 with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts, starred for the Birmingham Black Barons and the Kansas City Monarchs, and barnstormed the country — legend, in his own telling, sometimes sending his infielders to sit down while he struck out the side. On July 9, 1948, Cleveland signed him: at forty-two he became the oldest rookie in major-league history and the first Black pitcher in the American League, going 6–1 with a 2.48 earned run average and becoming the first Negro leagues player to pitch in a World Series, which Cleveland won. He was an All-Star with the St. Louis Browns in 1952 and 1953 and made his final major-league appearance on September 25, 1965, at fifty-nine, throwing three scoreless innings. In 1971 he became the first electee of the Hall of Fame's Negro League Committee inducted at Cooperstown.
